Local history

Salford didn’t begin with Lowry, from its early beginnings as a Saxon village on the banks of the Irwell, Salford has had a colourful past.

The English Civil War, Guy Fawkes and the gunpowder plotters, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels have all played their part in the city’s history.

There is a great deal of Salford’s industrial heritage to enjoy and heritage walks are a great way to learn about the city's fascinating past.
